The N97 isn’t a device that will trigger knee-jerk hysteria, but instead it should breed cool-headed excitement at the prospect of a new era of mobile experience.

Nokia N97

It may be an Nseries handset, but the N97 carves a new space in the otherwise blurred realm between smartphone and laptop – a product built on a foundation of rock solid mobile principles, Nokia innovations, and tangible new technologies, pushed to the extreme and embodied in a slimline pocket shell.
Just as the original N95 re-shaped our perceptions of what’s possible with a mobile device, the N97 again raises the bar beyond the reach of its peers by equipping us with a product that fuses the best proven Nokia hardware, software and Internet services, blended with a new flavour of design, ergonomics and usability.
Read on to explore the N97′s full list of talents.
The most physically immediate stand-out feature of the N97 is its kick-out full QWERTY keyboard, hidden behind a 3.5-inch widescreen 16:9 touch display that tilts smartly above the keys. Both control methods neatly coexist and are tailored to ensure every experience, be it messaging, social, entertainment-focussed or otherwise, are manageable via the most instinctive physical toolset available. The touchscreen promises to be exploited to full effect, even when inactive, courtesy of a new homescreen that automatically sucks in live information via custom widgets sat on a S60 5th Edition backbone.
The N97 enters the fray stomaching 32GB of on-board storage, double that of any mobile device currently in existence, and can take up to another 16GB via microSD, enabling it to become a portable multi-media computer with 48GB in your pocket. Of course Nokia wants you to abuse this space with music, movies, photos and N-Gage games, and as such has worked hard to ensure the N97′s battery is up to the task – it promises to kick out up to 37 hours of music and 4.5 hours of video.
Embracing location based services and the concept of context awareness, the N97 is location-savvy, automatically sensing where it is at any given time via A-GPS. The benefit being that you’ll be able to tap into local services with ease and share your social location with friends minus any extra fiddling or fuss.
Other key talents include a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and dual LED flash, GPS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, stereo Bluetooth and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Jonas Geust, Vice President, heading Nokia Nseries, had this to say about it:
“From the desktop to the laptop and now to your pocket, the Nokia N97 is the most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence”
It will cost 550 Euros(approx Rs 36000) (before taxes and subsidies) when it launches in the first half of 2009. What do you think?

This will not be a guide of what sim cloning is, but since these Softwares are used for years now, I will try to introduce it to you.

Sim Cloning means creating a copy of the Original Sim-card. Some of you might ask, what are the benefits of making a clone of your original Sim Card:

-Can I use both cards at the same time, so that I can have two phones at different locations?

=No. You can ONLY have one card active otherwise your Network provider would notice 2 copies of the same Number and might deactivate your account. You should also consider, that some logical conclusions are made by the Network Providers like this: You can’t be in France and few minutes later activate your Clone Card in Brazil. The Network Provider knows the Time that would be needed to travel from one place to the other one.

-If I have the original Simcard and the Clonecard active, would both telephones ring and can I receive SMS messages on both phones at the same time?

=No. Only one device would ring, more specificaly the telephone that replied first to the call by the Network. The same happens with the SMS’s.

-Can I have more numbers than one in the same phone at the same time?

= Yes and No, the “Simemu-card” can store up to 10 different phonenumbers. But,…they will not be active at the same time. Only one number is registered to the Network Provider. The switching between the different numbers is done through a smart menuitem in your phone.

-How do I write on my simcard the other 9 numbers?

=You can NOT use your original simcard and make changes on that card to support more numbers. Instead you need to find a “Programmable Card” and copy the Firmware of the “SIMEMU” on it. These ‘empty’ programmable cards are called “Silver card” or “Green card” according to their Processor (CPU) and the Memory Capacity.

-What do I need to make a clone of my original card?

=That is not quite easy any more since most of the Original Sim cards are made “Copy Proof”. This means that you are not able to read the necessary information out of them to use for your clone card. This procedure requires experiments with your Original Sim Card which might end into a destroyed Original Sim-Card. You will have to run a Software that will “brute force” the information out of your card, but the totally allowed read attempts are limited and will end up into a destroyed Card. Imagine the Hangman game with a Veeeery long word to guess

-Why would I want to make a clone of my card?

= There are many different opinions on that.
1) You can have a backup of your card in case you loose your phone
2) You can use the same Phonebook on all your numbers on the Sim in your cloned card.
3) You can have a spare phone in your car in case you would forget your phone at home. Just ask your wife, neighbor or dog to turn it off for you.
4) You can hide a second phone number from your wife without her knowledge
5) You can draw the attention of all your friends with new telephone devices although you appear with an old cheap one.
6) You can have different Network providers on the same clone *but only one will always be active.
7) You avoid destroying the contacs of your expensive phone due to card switching in case you need to change cards because you don’t want to carry your P910 to your job.
8) You can ask your Brother, Dad or Friend to make a clone of a new card and send you the “Ki and IMSI” through E-mail or Telephone. You can enter this info into your phone by just typing it like a sms message.

there are many more reasons I can’t think of right now.

-Is the card cloning expensive?

= You will need some equipment for the programming of the clone and the reading of the original card. And you will need an empty Pic card (Green or Silver). The whole equipment should cost you less or more than Rs 2500, Remember, never give away your simcard to somebody else to do this task since he will keep a copy of your simcard. The only info he will need to write down are few numbers.

Hope this little info was enough to make you decide if you want to clone your card or not.

Good luck and happy cloning

But just like keys to your house, fingerprints can be copied and used by an unauthorized person. The procedure of such reproducing is studied and analyzed here.

Method 1: Using Grease Stains Left on the Pad
Typically, a human finger contains so much grease that it leaves a non-visible mark where it touches and thus usually leaves a clear mark also on the scanner. This stain can be brought visible in many ways and even a mere breath can show the print very clearly. The scheme is to use this stain by breathing on the scanner and making the scanner think that there is a live finger pressed against its pad. A variation of this idea is to use a finger-like substance that has a flat surface and press it against the pad leaving the grease stain under it.
Grease is also known as a method of lubrication and corrosion guard. This is based on the fact that grease rejects water and that it is not a very good conductor. When there is a grease stain left on the surface of the pad, it can be used to prevent water or moist breath attaching that point. Water on the other half has a decent conductance and approximately the same capacitance of the skin. When we breathe, the moist gathers up in the valleys of the fingerprint and makes an inverted duplicate of the finger. Despite this inversion, the relations of the characteristic points are the same as in the enrolled fingerprint and so it could be detected as legitimate user’s print.
When substance (e.g. gummy bear (Leyden, 2003b) is pressed on the scanner’s pad, the grease stain isolates the material from the pad and capacitance is measured at the same points as by breathing on the scanner. In our tests, either of the techniques described did not work in the way they were supposed to. The scanner was very picky when detecting a finger, even with a live enrolled finger it was occasionally hard to log in. For the breathing, the scanner notified “Finger is too wet” and for the gummy bear attack there was also the “Invalid finger” error presented.

Method 2: Creating a Mold Using a Live Finger
Some typical household items carry the properties of a real finger when it comes to capacitance, conductivity and flexibility. One of the easiest ways to imitate human finger is to create a gelatine finger from gelatin sheets or powder. When using a mold, this material can be formed into a shape of the legitimate user’s finger. The mold itself can also be manufactured using equipment commonly available, such as hot setting adhesive.
This method is based on the fact that gelatine finger has about the same capacitance as a real finger (~20Mohms/cm) and thus the scanner is unable to distinguish these two. Now all that is needed is a gelatine finger that corresponds to the real finger at the accuracy level of the scanner. For the 100 SC scanner this resolution is 500dpi, each dot representing a small point for measuring the capacitance. If capacitance is high, then at that point there is a ridge, if small, there is a valley of the fingerprint.
First, the mold must be created. In our test we used hot glue. It is important to stick the finger in the glue when it is still liquid but not too hot. It is a good idea to moisten the finger beforehand. After the mold is ready and cooled down, some liquid gelatine is poured on it. To get the best result, it is advised to use gelatine sheets mixed in hot water. Boiling should be avoided to reduce the amount of bubbles. After the gelatine is congealed (to speed up the process, the mold with the gelatine on it, can be cooled down in a refrigerator), the fake finger is ready to be used. Same rules apply here as it did with the gummy bear; the right amount of pressure must be found.
This method was proven to be successful and thus security was compromised. After several tryouts and many trial-error experiments a suitable way to manufacture a usable mold was found. As a result, we were able to create a fake finger that was used to fool the scanner. The result is not a hundred percent proof solution as only few times out of hundred ended up in a successful detection of the 335A. Sten, A. Kaseva and T. Virtanen finger. With this success rate it is not easy to go and break into someone’s computer, because after a few failed detections the scanner locks the smart card and PUK-code is needed to unlock the card. This method is not very usable for real life situations, as it needs a live finger for the mold creation. Though this method is further developed in the next method and thus brought into more usable form. Yet, it shows that a fingerprint scanner can be fooled with a pretty simple scheme and a very low budget.

Method 3: Creating a mold using a latent fingerprint
The most usable and also the most probable form of attacking a fingerprint scanner is by using a real fingerprint left by the legitimate user. Now that security of the scanner has been compromised, it is time to try preparing the mold without any help from the target. Typically we leave fingerprints anywhere we touch, mugs, door handles, stair rails and of course keyboards. These latent prints can be brought visible and then used to make a mold and a fake finger. The creation of the mold is different than in the previous attack, but the usage of the finger follows the same path.
Fingerprints consist mainly of grease and are usually latent but with e.g. photocopier powder they can be made visible. With a digital camera a visible fingerprint can be ported to a computer and retouched to a suitable form. Using a technique that is widely used with do-it-yourself circuit boards, a negative image of this fingerprint is printed on a transparency. A photosensitive layer of lacquer is applied to a copper plated circuit board and transparency is placed over that. When UV-light hits the surface, the black-printed areas of the transparency protect the lacquer and the rest react with the light. After a few minutes the lacquer is washed off with a lye dilution and a fingerprint should be visible on the circuit board. Now this board is corroded with ferric chloride and the result is a flat mold of the fingerprint. Gelatine liquid can be poured on to the mold as a thin layer and after congealing we have a fake finger. This finger is used between an intruder’s finger and a fingerprint scanner. A fake finger is placed between the pad and a human finger in order to fool the scanner.
Compared to method 2 where a live finger was used to create a mold, this approach is very different. A latent fingerprint is used and the procedure is divided into five sections, obtaining fingerprint, making the transparency, creation of the mold, creation of the finger and using the finger. First, a clear and flawless picture of the target’s fingerprint must be obtained. The fingerprint must of course match the finger that is enrolled to the smart card. When a suitable print is found a good way is to use photocopier powder to dust the print visible and then use a digital camera to take a snapshot of it. It is important to make some measurements to get the scale of the print correct, i.e. measure the distance between two characteristic points.

Making of transparency step-by-step:
1. Use image manipulation program to edit the fingerprint image.
2. Clear out the excess dust from the sides of the print.
3. Adjust contrast so that the print has a clear pattern.
4. Scale the image according to the measurements done on the actual dusted fingerprint.
5. Invert the image to negative.
6. Print the image on the transparency.

The making of the mold step-by-step:
1. Spray the photosensitive lacquer on the circuit board and let it dry for a while.
2. Place the transparency on the circuit board with tape.
3. Expose the board through transparency with UV-light for 5-15 minutes.
4. Take off the transparency
5. Develop the lacquer using NaOH-solution. Use watercolor brush to brush the lacquer. Be careful not to rub off all the lacquer.
6. When you see the fingerprint, wash the board with water.
7. Corrode the board using FeCl3-solution.
8. Once the copper is corroded off, wash the board thoroughly with water.
9. Use soap or alcohol to rinse any remaining lacquer off the board.

The creation of the finger:
1. Soften 40g of gelatine sheets in cold water for about 5 minutes.
2. Heat up the water (1/2dl) to boiling and take the kettle off the stove.
3. Put the softened gelatine sheets into the hot water. Be careful not to boil them.
4. Stir for 10 minutes.
5. Let the mixture cool down a bit. You can try to reduce the amount of bubbles with a gentle stir.
6. Pour some of the gelatine mixture on the mold so that it covers the print completely. About 2mm is a good layer thickness.
7. Put the mold in the refrigerator and let it congeal for at least 15 minutes. The longer the better, but keep the mold in a humid place or the gelatine will dry up.
8. After the gelatine has congealed you can separate it from the mold. Using a knife peel off a bit from the corner and then slowly lift the rest of the finger.
9. The finger should now have a distinctive fingerprint.
10. You can handle the finger in room temperature but be careful not to warm it too much as it will start to melt again.

Figure 2 – Gelatine spread on the board as a thin layer
The usage of the finger:
1. You should now have a gelatine finger that feels like a soft real finger.
2. Ensure the smart card is inserted into the reader.
3. Wait for the login screen to prompt for the finger.
4. Place the gelatine finger on the tip of your finger.
5. Gently press the gelatine finger on the scanner.
6. If you press too hard you will get “Finger is too wet” error. Too light and the “finger” wont be detected.
7. If you continually get “Finger detection failed!” then it is advised to stop trying after about
5-10 tryouts or you will get the smart card locked and thus increase the risk of getting caught. Try again after the legitimate user has successfully logged on one time. This will reset the fault counter.
This technique was proven to be successful and security was compromised although the success rate was not that high. Only a few out of a hundred tryouts ended up in a successful detection of the finger. But this is not a bad sign. It merely shows that the break-in can be done and improved. The most critical part of the mold manufacturing is the transparency creation. It takes a skilled image manipulator to create a usable fingerprint if the print itself is not of a very high quality. With a professional dusting kit the fingerprint is probably much better than with a photocopier powder. With a good mold this method could be extremely effective.
All this can be achieved within one day and thus the attack is not very expensive considering the time used. If the contents of the target computer are very valuable, then this method can be very usable indeed.

The beauty of Linux is in users ability to do large amount of customization to have a unique user expereince. So today we will look in to some tips for a “better” Linux experience. The term “better” here is relative, because what works for me might seem a distraction for some or plain annoying to others; some of this “tips” might appeal to beginners, while advanced users might find it too easy. Hopefully some of these tips will be helpful to some of you.

1) Turn on your computer remotely by sending “magic network packets” to WakeOnLan supported network cards. This can be very helpful if you run a server at home but only access it occasionally. There is no need for you to have the server running all the time.

2) If you dual boot with windows, accessing Linux file system from your windows installation might be important for you. There are three windows applications that can help you do this: Explore2fs, Ext2 Installable File System, DiskInternals Linux Reader.
3) Similarly to have read/write access for Windows NTFS file system, you can use NTFS-3G. Most recent popular Linux distribution has NTFS-3G installed out of the box.

4) Share a single mouse and keyboard with multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, with support for copy and paste. Thanks to Synergy, the most popular free KVM software switch out there.

5) Recovering data from damaged media can be handled by several Linux tools including some LiveCD, specifically built to help recover data. Parted Magic, Ubuntu Rescue Remix, SystemRescueCd, Foremost (data recovery), Ddrescue.

6) If you are a blogger like me and enjoy using desktop client over web editors, you will find these clients useful: Gnome Blog, Drivel Journal Editor, BloGTK, Thingamablog, Bleezer, QTM.

7) If you are a webdeveloper/designer, you will often find yourself testing a website across many platforms and browsers. IEs4Linux is a great painless way to check how IE browser will render your website. You could use services like browsershots, but I had mixed results with them.

Does your iPod miss iTunes? Here are three itunes alternative which will do most of what your iTunes would do, not an exact replacement; but does the job: Amarok, Banshee, Rhythmbox.

9) Follow multiple files by creating multiple windows in your console with the help of MultiTail, also known as tail on steroids.

10) Use Terminator to split your screen space with many terminal windows, both horizontally and vertically.

11) For even better control over your terminal display and customization and complex functions, GNU Screen is a much better choice over terminator; however terminator serves only one purpose.

12) Use RSIBreak to help prevent Repetitive Strain Injury. RSIBreak will force you to take short break, depending on your configuration, so that you don’t over-work yourself.

RSIBreak

13) If you find yourself working on a dumb terminal (hello sysadmins) or prefer working on terminals, you will find newsbeuter to be an excellent RSS reader for the console.

14) I know some will disagree with me on this, but conky is an excellent compliment to your desktop experience. If properly configured, it can add a lot of value to your desktop environment. Check out this very creative conky setup and read about it here.

15) Do you do podcasts? rootprompt has a great article with huge resources for both Linux podcasters and listeners

You’ve read the reviews and digested the key feature enhancements and operational changes. Now it’s time to delve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP’s secrets.

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type ’systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type ’systeminfo > info.txt’. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run… and type ‘gpedit.msc’; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care — some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter ‘rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation’ in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That’s it — just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that’s not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word ‘hide’ and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include ‘eventcreate’ and ‘eventtriggers’ for creating and watching system events, ‘typeperf’ for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and ’schtasks’ for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options — they’re all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support — the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type ‘ipv6 install’ into Run… (it’s OK, it won’t ruin your existing network setup) and then ‘ipv6 /?’ at the command line to find out more. If you don’t know what IPv6 is, don’t worry and don’t bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using ‘taskkill /pid’ and the task number, or just ‘tskill’ and the process number. Find that out by typing ‘tasklist’, which will also tell you a lot about what’s going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you’ve got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing ‘regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll’ at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing ‘regsvr32 zipfldr.dll’.

9. XP has ClearType — Microsoft’s anti-aliasing font display technology — but doesn’t have it enabled by default. It’s well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who’s using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum’s real IP address — they can find this out by going to http://www.whatismyip.com — and get them to make sure that they’ve got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.

11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As… and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run… from the start menu and type ‘control userpasswords2′, which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options… and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can’t see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You’ll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By… Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks — if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn’t, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.

It can be a nightmare if someone else takes control of your Google Account because all your Google services like Gmail, Orkut, Google Calendar, Blogger, AdSense, Google Docs and even Google Checkout are tied to the same account.

Here are some options suggested by Google Support when your forget the Gmail password or if someone else takes ownership of your Google Account and changes the password:

1. Reset Your Google Account Password:
Type the email address associated with your Google Account or Gmail user name at google.com/accounts/ForgotPasswd – you will receive an email at your secondary email address with a link to reset your Google Account Password. This will not work if the other person has changed your secondary email address or if you no longer have access to that address.

2. For Google Accounts Associated with Gmail:
If you have problems while logging into your Gmail account, you can consider contacting Google by filling this form. It however requires you to remember the exact date when you created that Gmail account.

3. For Hijacked Google Accounts Not Linked to Gmail:
If your Google Account doesn’t use a Gmail address, contact Google by filling this form. This approach may help bring back your Google Account if you religiously preserve all your old emails. You will be required to know the exact creation date of your Google Account plus a copy of that original “Google Email Verification” message. It may be slightly tough to get your Google Account back but definitely not impossible if you have the relevant information in your secondary email mailbox.

1. Login into your Orkut Account.

2. Goto your friend’s album and open the photo that you need to copy.

3. Once the photo is loaded to it’s full size just place the mouse cursor on the photo.

4. Press the left click button and drag and drop the photo onto the ADDRESS BAR.I think this trick is no longer working. So I have a new trick….

Just DRAG and DROP the PHOTO onto the current/new TAB (If you have IE 7). That’s it . This trick is working now!!

4. Now the photo gets displayed seperately on your browser.

5. You can Right-Click and select the Save As option to save the photo onto your PC.

The browser also displays the direct link to the photo. This link can be used to share the Orkut photos with your friends without the need to login to your Orkut account to access photos.

Please express your opinions through comments.Cheer Up..

Happy Orkut Hacking.
